Playing the Custom over the next several days, a re-occurring thought echoed in our mind as we considered its exceptionally bold and authoritative voice... “This is the Steinway Grand of electric guitars...” And it undoubtedly is all that and more. Sure, it’s on the high side of nine pounds and change – no chambering for the ‘68, and we abide. The mahogany neck is a huge piece of wood that functions much like the sound board of a piano. Mated to the ebony fingerboard, the neck seems to create an entirely unique and robust string vibration, rich with sustain and harmonics. Compared to a typical Les Paul with a rosewood fingerboard, the sound is brilliant and vibrant, with a bolder dynamic response to pick attack – not unlike the difference between a tube versus solid state rectifier.

The bridge pickup delivers the clarity of a pedal steel – hardly bashful... musical and confident with no harshness or edgy overtones, but the depth and breadth takes your breath away. The tone of the Custom with the Bare Knuckles wide open in the bridge is startling at first... not what you usually hear from a Les Paul, and this is good. Another luscious and very worthy sound to be experienced and savored. The neck position renders the reedy voice of a baritone sax on the low strings, with plenty of treble presence on the top, as if you were pounding a 4x12 cab loaded with JBL D120s or EVs. Come to think of it, the entire vibe of the Custom with the Mule set can be compared to an EV speaker – utterly huge with all frequencies present and accounted for, and absolutely no sag or whimpering. Yes, you will be noticed. Impossible not to be.

The ‘68 Custom delivers an unmistakable throwdown of monumental girth, whether your intentions are smooth, marshmellow jazz, phunkadelic shots of malt liquor and Courvoissier, steely blues weaving in and out of a 3-piece horn section and a big B3, The Creamish, classic big-hair rock, or the not-so-subtle staccato meanderings of a C-tuned metal thrash. It’s all there, and if you can tote the extra pound that delivers the goods, the ‘68 Custom will not only serve you well – it will also leave a lasting memory with fans and fellow musicians alike as they leave the gig muttering, “Cool guitar.”
